Green Sustainability Policy

Green Sustainability Policy

Balbirnie House is committed to operating responsibly, minimizing our environmental footprint, and contributing positively to the communities we serve. As part of our dedication to sustainable hospitality, we implement and continually improve eco-friendly practices across all areas of our operations.

Our Environmental Commitment:

In 2022 we introduced an internal Environmental Taskforce, across the span of company directors, operational management, and maintenance supervision. This has a monthly minuted meeting, considering all aspects of environmental evolution, together with energy costs. This operates in a proactive way, additionally always seeking any ideas for improvement and evolution from all working in and around Balbirnie House. From an insurance perspective we are carrying Building Reinstatement for the category A listed national treasure, above £25M – together with Business Interruption at a further £25M. Environmental Commitment extends across the entire span of all health and safety, and doing all that is possible to maintain and safeguard the property itself.

We strive to:

  • Reduce energy, water, and resource consumption through efficient systems and responsible operations.
  • Choose sustainable materials, products, and technologies whenever feasible.
  • Prevent pollution by minimizing waste, reducing emissions, and managing chemicals safely.

Energy Efficiency

We commit to:

  • Use energy-efficient lighting, and appliances.
  • Monitor energy usage to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Encourage guests and staff to conserve electricity by turning off devices and lights when not in use.

Electric Vehicles

  • Balbirnie House switched to using electric company cars in 2018.
  • We were one of the first UK hotels to install on-site Tesla chargers in 2019.
  • In 2023 we actioned very significant upgrades, to include twelve Go Zero electric vehicle charging stations.
  • In early 2026 we intend implementing infrastructure for a further 10 electric vehicle charging stations. (This will require upgrades to electric substations.)
  • In early 2026 we also intend implementing infrastructure and cabling so as to subsequently enable EVTOL charging when this becomes a reality.

Water Conservation

We pledge to:

  • Implement linen and towel reuse programs for guests.
  • Actively monitor and repair plumbing to prevent unnecessary water loss.

We aim to:

  • Reduce single-use plastics and non-recyclable materials.
  • Provide clearly marked recycling stations for guests and staff.
